“Solar return” is astrologer-speak for “birthday.” Specifically, it’s the moment when the Sun returns to the exact degree position it occupies in the root chart. Thus, the moment of your solar return can occur a day adjacent to your calendar birthday. In the context of natal astrology, the solar return represents a personal new year. The chart for this moment is called the “solar return chart,” a predictive tool used since ancient times. Observing the interactions between the natal & solar return charts, astrologers can gain insight into the year ahead.
I’m not generally one for celebrity news, but as an example, let’s take Britney Spears. The year 2021 was a lot of things, and one of those things was the Year of Britney. Suddenly, the Y2K-era pop icon had returned to her place at the top of every conversation, her fan-base more passionate than ever. The focus? A brutal legal battle with her father, over her thirteen-year-long conservatorship. Through the course of 2021, public interest in Spears’s situation erupted, social media aflame with calls to #FreeBritney. Needless to say, it was a big year for her. The timeline of the highly publicized legal proceedings lines up quite neatly with Spears’s “personal year” that began with her December 2020 solar return, making for a great example.
Note: Astrologers differ on this, but I cast solar return charts for the natal location. Some prefer to cast a relocated solar return for where the person now resides.

The Solar Return Chart
While it’s imperative to compare the solar return (SR) chart to the root chart, it alone can also offer information. Just examining Spears’s 2020 SR as a standalone chart, we see a number of indications of the year’s circumstances.
Beginning with the angles, we see a Pisces ascendant & Sagittarius midheaven, both mutable. This mutability at the angles indicates a year characterized by much change & little stability. This is certainly true of this year for Spears. Neptune tightly conjoins the ascendant, suggesting dissolved boundaries related to identity, as well as dreaming up new possibilities for herself. At the south nodal bending, Neptune is further emphasized and suggests personal release. Indeed, Spears succeeded in dissolving boundaries placed around her identity, expressing her desire to pursue things she’s dreamed of doing.

Looking to Jupiter, who rules both primary angles, is quite telling. As the ascendant-lord of the SR, Jupiter signifies Spears herself in this year. It also represents her career, via rulership of the midheaven. Jupiter’s in fall in the Capricorn 11th, tightly flanked by Pluto and Saturn. This is a pretty apt depiction of Spears and her career at the onset of this year, in my opinion! The beginning of this SR saw Spears’s conservatorship being extended for a fourth time that calendar year. This is illustrated by Spears’s significator, Jupiter, in fall or “exile,” besieged by power-hungry Pluto on one side and restrictive Saturn, emboldened by domicile, on the other. Placement in the 11th shows the environment of public support over the course of the year. It was truly Spears’s fan-base who rallied the support needed to bring the situation to greater public awareness.
Spears’s returned Sun sits in the 10th house, highlighting her career and signaling a return to public attention. It also puts issues related to the father (Sun) into public awareness (10th). The Moon occupies the 4th house, suggesting emotional focus on, and changes in, foundations, home, and parents—the father, in particular.
Mercury & Venus both occupy the Scorpio 9th house. Mercury in Scorpio likes to dig up hidden information. Placement here calls to mind Spears’s emotional (Scorpio) testimony (Mercury) in her public legal proceedings (9th), which unveiled previously unknown details surrounding Spears’s treatment. Mercury’s sextile with Saturn suggests a potential opportunity to legally regain personal responsibility.
Venus here seems to speak to the larger issue brought to public discourse at this time, around the legal control of women—this seems pretty neatly depicted by a detriment Venus in the 9th! Venus loosely opposes (and receives) Uranus in the 3rd, suggesting the possibility for sudden turns or unexpected shifts related to the legal proceedings, of which there were a few.
In domicile in the 2nd house, Mars shows the potential for Spears to assert herself regarding management of her personal resources.
Comparing with the Natal Chart
Comparing the SR chart with Spears’s natal chart reveals much more information than looking at the SR by itself. The bi-wheel below shows Spears’s natal chart in the central wheel, with the SR chart surrounding it. Notice that the SR ascendant occupies Spears’s natal 6th house, while her natal ascendant occupies the SR 8th house. This shows the potential for a lot of “hidden” matters to come to focus, and highlights topics like servitude, vulnerability, shared resources, & endings. These themes, of course, all related to Spears’s conservatorship battle.

Simply comparing which natal & SR houses planets occupy adds valuable detail regarding the context of the year’s events. For instance, domicile Mars in the SR 2nd transits Spears’s natal 7th, showing that assertion related to managing her personal resources occurred in a rather adversarial atmosphere, and with the aid of “significant others,” like her longtime partner and new, personally selected lawyer.
The SR 4th house Moon transits Spears’s natal 9th, illustrating how the emotional focus on foundations & father occurs against the backdrop of legal proceedings. Likewise, the SR 9th housing Mercury & Venus occupies Spears’s 2nd house, connecting the legal case to matters of personal resources. Spears’s natal Sagittarius 3rd house assembly of personal planets correlates to the SR 10th, bringing Spears’s personal values & expression to the public eye.
SR Mercury engages in an out-of-sign conjunction with Spears’s natal Uranus, suggesting the potential for Spears’s personal expression to trigger sudden changes. SR 9th house Venus squares Spears’s natal Moon in the 5th, illustrating how the legal battle triggered action related to her emotional needs & comfort, especially regarding 5th house matters like pleasure, enjoyment, & creativity.
Interestingly, the SR ascendant-lord, Jupiter, conjoins Spears’s natal ascendant-lord, Venus, offering perhaps a sign of empowerment to Spears and her sense of identity. Natal Venus’s proximity to the south node points to much of the diminishment of personal agency Spears has faced in life. SR Jupiter’s conjunction occurs square Spears’s natal Pluto, triggering action related to power dynamics.
I’ll admit that I was skeptical when I first encountered the concept of solar returns. But as you can see, they provide a surprising amount of information. When used in tandem with another ancient technique, annual profections, they become even more useful. In my own practice, I find solar returns, annual profections, & eclipses to be a potent trifecta of predictive insight.
